For years, I’ve explored the question of how far art can go to delve into the deepest facets of human existence. What does it mean to fully surrender? How does it feel to relinquish control? And what happens when we blur the line between human and object? These questions form the foundation of *Xay One*, a project that has taken me as a photographer and artist into an entirely new dimension.
The Essence of Xay One
*Xay One* is more than an art project—it’s a journey. A journey into isolation, submission, and trust. At its center is Mary Shields, an extraordinary woman who has chosen to explore her physical and mental limits by becoming a living sculpture. Encased in a tight latex suit, rendered deaf, blind, and mute by a mask secured with a heavy collar, she becomes part of an oversized teddy bear—a metaphor for childhood memories and comfort. Yet inside this bear lies a starkly different reality: complete helplessness.
For me as a photographer, *Xay One* is a delicate balance between control and trust. Mary doesn’t just surrender to the project; she surrenders to me. Every shot, every scene demands precision and sensitivity—not just technically but emotionally. It’s about capturing her isolation, making her vulnerability visible, and challenging the viewer: Do you still want to hug this teddy bear?
The Impact and Future of Xay One
The reactions to *Xay One* are as diverse as the project itself. Some are captivated by its artistic depth; others feel discomfort or even rejection. This is precisely what makes it so powerful: it provokes thought. About control and freedom. About vulnerability and strength. About what it means to be human.
But *Xay One* is not static—it constantly evolves. New ideas are integrated, and new challenges are embraced. There are plans for longer performances, interactive elements, and perhaps even live streams. Where this journey will lead? No one knows for sure—and that’s what makes it so exciting.
This project isn’t just art; it’s a dialogue between me as the artist, Mary as the living sculpture, and each one of you as viewers. It invites you to be part of this journey—through images, videos, or your own reflections.
I look forward to sharing more about *Xay One* with you and taking you along on this extraordinary journey. Stay curious—this is only the beginning!
